CORE UROLOGY

Core urology refers to the general, non-subspecialist aspects of urological practice that encompass a broad range of conditions affecting the kidneys, bladder, prostate, urethra, and genitalia.

Common Areas Within Core Urology

  • Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men (e.g. benign prostatic enlargement)

  • Haematuria (blood in the urine)

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • Kidney stones

  • Scrotal and penile conditions

  • Urological cancers (bladder, prostate, kidney, testicular)

  • Incontinence and voiding dysfunction

Investigations
Core urology often involves a variety of diagnostic procedures, including:

  • Urine analysis and culture

  • Ultrasound or CT imaging

  • Flexible cystoscopy (a camera examination of the bladder)

  • Urodynamic studies in selected patients

Management
Management options range from lifestyle advice and medical therapies to minimally invasive procedures or surgery, depending on the specific condition.
